Baccano! Review

Baccano! (Italian Ruckus) is a little hard to talk about without going into spoiler territory, I will endeavor to do my best to not give away to much of what is going on in the crazy world that is Baccano! If you liked and could follow shows like Lost, Happy Town, Flash Forward, or The Event, you will be more at home while watching the anime series Baccano then most folks.

Baccano's story is not told in the traditional linear fashion, in fact it opens up with two characters discussing the best way to tell the story. Where and when should it begin, who should be the main character if any?

Baccano Mr Vice President

You're never going to tell me how many points I needed are you ...

Baccano's story covers a vast timeline from 1711 aboard the sailing ship Advenna Avis, to the streets of New York city in 2001. Much like the television show Lost, the story bounces around the timeline with a majority of the story taking place in Prohibition America during the 1930's.

The main stages for the story elements play out in five general locations the cities of Chicago and New York, the offices of the information brokers at the Daily Days, the sailing ship Advenna Avis, and the express train The Flying Pussyfoot. Other locations pop up from time to time but usually only for a scene or two.

Its hard to describe what is going on in Baccano, there is a war going on between various Mafia families . But more is going on than meets the eye, other groups are getting caught up in the events, including two small gangs one being led by Jacuzzi Splot and the other being led by spoiled rich kid Dallas Genoard. We have not even mentioned yet a pair of gold hearted, lovable, and charismatic and yet at times dumb as bricks thieves on a cross country spree, or a group of immortals seeking an alchemical Pangaea, let alone a monster known as the Rail Chaser stalking the passengers of the hijacked train the Flying Pussyfoot. Wait what?

Baccano! Math

Baccano! Take all ingredients blend well strain and enjoy!

It might seem like a daunting task to keep all of these plots straight (and there are more than the ones listed above), but the diligent viewer is rewarded with a great and well thought out story that slowly comes together as the series progresses. Give Baccano! time to warm up as the first few episodes can be hard to follow because of the way the story is told.

The series is made up of 16 episodes that are all currently available on DVD at a reasonable price.

The Passangers of the Flying Pussyfoot

The main story arc is pretty much wrapped up by episode 13 with the final three remaining episodes serving as more of an epilogue than anything else as they add very little to the overall story.

I do have to give credit for the way the series comes to an end in episode 16, with a conversation between Mr. Vice President and Carol. I think it is one of the simplest but best endings I have ever seen for a story.

The characters in Baccano are great and are really fleshed out, sometimes it's hard to tell who the good guys and bad guys are while at other times it is only too clear to see the evil or good in a characters heart.

You can see early on why Carol and Mr. Vice President have a hard time nailing one character down as the main for the story, there are a lot of characters to follow in Baccano! Isaac Dian, Miria Harvent, Firo Prochainezo, Maiza Avaro, Keith Gandor, Berga Gandor, Luck Gandor, Szilard Quates, the homunculus Ennis, Lua Klein, Ladd Russo, Chane Laforet, Nice Holystone, Jacuzzi Splot, Eve Genoard, Dallas Genoard, Czeslaw Meyer, and these are just the characters named in the opening credits! There are many more recurring characters throughout the story.

Want to know how odd the story is? Just take a look at the names of the episodes.
